Another fall from grace for a once-familiar TV face. Zachery Ty Bryan, best known for his role as the mischievous eldest son on Home Improvement, has once again found himself entangled in legal trouble. The actor and his girlfriend were both arrested over the weekend in Eugene, Oregon, adding another chapter to a long and troubling list of incidents.
According to court records, Bryan was taken into custody on Saturday for violating the terms of his probation, which stems from a prior domestic violence conviction. Authorities have denied him bail, meaning he’ll remain behind bars until Wednesday, December 3. His three-year probation, issued in 2023, isn’t set to end until October 2026. This violation could now jeopardize his chance for early release or leniency moving forward.
But he wasn’t the only one in trouble. Bryan’s girlfriend, Johnnie Faye Cartwright, was also arrested and booked into the same facility that day. She faces multiple charges, including driving under the influence (DUII), three counts of reckless endangerment, and an attempted first-degree assault charge. Her arraignment is expected to take place Monday, where prosecutors may outline the severity of the alleged offenses.
Bryan’s legal entanglements in Oregon go back several years. He first made headlines in 2020 after a drunken altercation with Cartwright led to multiple charges. Although some were dropped, he was ultimately convicted of menacing. That conviction initiated the probation he remains on today—which makes this new arrest a serious escalation.
Since that initial case, Bryan’s record has grown increasingly checkered. He has been arrested multiple times, including a DUII in Oklahoma and a disturbing case in South Carolina where he was accused of assaulting and choking Cartwright. Many fans who grew up watching him on TV have struggled to reconcile his on-screen charm with his ongoing legal struggles.
Just last week, Bryan had publicly declared that he was on a path of “personal growth” and working to take responsibility for past violent behavior. But this latest arrest throws that claim into question. Only weeks earlier, a different woman obtained a five-year restraining order against him after alleging that he physically and verbally abused her in July. Although no new criminal charges have yet been filed in that case, the accusations have certainly added to his mounting public scrutiny.
