Brrr! UT San Antonio Campuses Shut Down Due to Freezing Temps
In a move to prioritize safety, UT San Antonio has decided to close its doors on Monday, January 26th, due to the icy grip of sub-freezing temperatures. But here's where it gets controversial: while some might argue that it's an overreaction, the university is taking no chances with the well-being of its students and staff.
Academic Campuses: A Day of No Classes
For students, this means a much-needed break from the usual grind. All classes at the Main Campus, Downtown Campus, Southwest Campus, Park West Campus, San Pedro I, and One Riverwalk Place are canceled on Monday. Labs and other in-person programs are also off the table. But what about those with essential job functions? They're advised to check in with their supervisors for guidance on scheduling.
Warming Up: A Cozy Haven on Campus
On Monday, the Main Campus will transform into a haven for students and employees alike. The John Peace Library will be open 24/7 as a warming center, offering a much-needed respite from the cold. Additionally, the Student Union north building, conveniently located beside the McKinney Humanities Building, will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., providing a warm and welcoming space.
Campus Residents: We've Got Your Back
Housing and Residence Life staff will be on-site and on-call to ensure the safety and comfort of campus residents. They'll maintain safe walkways, provide building access, and address any emergency needs. Front desks will operate as usual from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, offering assistance and support. And for those who need a bite to eat, the Roadrunner Cafe will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday and Monday, ensuring that no one goes hungry.
Stay Informed: Updates and Alerts
To stay in the loop, keep an eye on UT San Antonio Today and the university's official social media channels on Facebook, Instagram, and X. These platforms will provide the latest updates and information. Additionally, university leaders will continue to monitor conditions and share additional updates as needed on Monday morning.
And this is the part most people miss: while the academic campuses are closed, UT Health and the Health Science Center campus, including clinical locations, will remain open for patient care and essential services. So, if you're a patient or have an appointment, rest assured that your health needs will be taken care of.
So, what do you think? Is this a necessary precaution or an overreaction? Share your thoughts in the comments below! We'd love to hear your opinions and spark a discussion.
