She was preparing to examine a dead wolf, a tragic reminder of the harsh realities of the wild. Klauder identified the wolf I saw as 1202, a female born in 2009 and fitted with a collar in 2012. She was the last survivor of the Riley Creek pack, an incredible feat for a wolf reaching the age of ten.
But here's where it gets controversial... Wolf biologist Bridget Borg, thanks to the satellite collar, knew the life history of this wolf, now named Riley. Born to a dominant mother, Riley's future was foreshadowed by her lineage. Her mother led the East Fork pack for a decade, a true alpha female. Riley, an assertive wolf, followed in her mother's footsteps, becoming a leader herself.
When Riley was three, park biologists collared her, noting her aggressive nature. They believed she would be a follower, but Riley had other plans. She split from the pack, a high-risk move, and survived to become a leader. She started her own family, the Riley Creek pack, just south of the East Fork pack.
The pack grew, and so did their territory. They challenged the Grant Creek pack, and in a series of battles, emerged victorious. The Riley Creek pack almost doubled their land, a testament to their strength and leadership.
And this is the part most people miss... With the loss of Riley's mate, Midnight, in 2018, the pack began to decline. Trapping outside the park took its toll, and the pack's numbers dwindled. Riley persevered, a true survivor, even with her bum leg and squinty eye.
