Sports injuries can be more severe for female athletes during their period, according to a recent study. The research found that athletes take three times longer to recover from injuries that occur during menstruation, which could be due to low estrogen, iron loss, and inflammation. The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, monitored 33 elite Spanish soccer players over four seasons, tracking their menstrual cycles and lower limb injuries. While the overall injury rates were similar, the study revealed that injuries during menstruation resulted in 684 days lost per 1,000 training hours compared to 206 days for injuries outside this time. This highlights the importance of considering the menstrual cycle in training regimens to prevent more serious injuries. The findings emphasize the need for further research to understand these potential risks and for coaches and athletes to integrate menstrual cycle awareness into their health monitoring.
