Should someone hold the winning ticket, they would have an estimated cash option of $781.3 million before taxes.
However, as of now, it's still uncertain whether anyone has purchased a winning ticket. This particular drawing represents the 47th iteration in the current series of jackpots, establishing a new record for the most drawings without a winner in Powerball's history. If no tickets match the drawn numbers, the prize will continue to rise for the next drawing scheduled on Saturday night. The last time a Powerball jackpot was claimed was back on September 6, when two tickets split a massive $1.787 billion prize in Missouri and Texas.
Historically, Powerball has only seen one jackpot win on Christmas Eve, which occurred in 2011, while there have been four winners on Christmas Day itself since the game's inception in 1992.
To take home the jackpot, players must match all five white balls along with the red Powerball drawn during the event. A fortunate individual who wins the jackpot can choose between receiving a lump sum payment or opting for an annuity that provides an initial payout followed by 29 annual payments, each increasing by 5% annually. It’s important to note that both payment options are calculated before taxes.
This event marks the second occurrence in Powerball's history of consecutive jackpots exceeding the remarkable $1 billion mark. Notably, in 2022, a single ticket purchased in Altadena, California, claimed an astonishing $2.04 billion jackpot, setting the record for the largest jackpot in both Powerball and lottery history.
The odds of winning this grand prize remain daunting at 1 in 292.2 million, according to the official Powerball statistics. Over the past decade, we've witnessed a dramatic surge in lottery jackpots, even as the likelihood of winning has diminished significantly.
In a notable change made in 2015, Powerball increased the number of white balls in play from 59 to 69, while reducing the number of red balls from 35 to 26, resulting in the current odds of striking it rich compared to the previous odds of 1 in 175.2 million.
