On Monday, a medieval tower, the Torre dei Conti, partially collapsed during renovations, sending shockwaves through the heart of Italy's capital. This incident, near the iconic Roman Forum ruins, resulted in one worker being rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, while another was trapped under the rubble. The Torre dei Conti, standing at a height of 29 meters, is a prominent structure near the Colosseum. Its location, halfway along the Via dei Fori Imperiali, places it in the midst of Rome's bustling tourist area, a stark contrast to the chaos of the collapse.
Videos circulating on social media captured the dramatic moments of the collapse, showing clouds of dust billowing from the tower's windows. The second collapse occurred while firefighters were already on the scene, attempting a rescue with aerial ladders. The building, though still standing, sustained significant internal damage.
The tower, originally built by Pope Innocent III for his family in the early 13th century, once housed city hall offices. It has been vacant since 2006 and was undergoing a four-year renovation project, scheduled to be completed next year. The tower's original height was twice its current size, but it was reduced due to damage from earthquakes in the 14th and 17th centuries. The area around the tower was closed off to pedestrians due to the ongoing restoration work.
