M&S Expands: New and Refurbished Stores Coming to Greater Manchester (2026)

The retail landscape is about to get a major shake-up! Marks & Spencer (M&S) has unveiled an ambitious plan to expand its food business, and the stakes are high. With a 'wish-list' of 500 potential sites, including several in Greater Manchester, the company aims to double its food empire and create thousands of jobs.

But here's the exciting part: M&S isn't just looking to expand; it's also planning a significant upgrade. The company currently operates 330 stores in the UK, but it's aiming to transform these into 180 mixed stores and a whopping 420 dedicated food shops. This means several locations in Greater Manchester could be in for a treat, with new stores in Oldham, West Cheadle, Marple, and Ashton-in-Makerfield, while existing stores in Didsbury, Prestwich, Altrincham, Leigh, and Hale could get a much-needed makeover.

And the expansion doesn't stop there! M&S has its sights set on Chorley, Glossop, and Knutsford, as well as 200 potential locations in London. By April, 20 stores will either be launched or renovated, providing 800 new job opportunities. This bold move comes as M&S recovers from a costly cyber attack, demonstrating its resilience and commitment to growth.

The key to M&S's strategy? Acquiring large sites to stock its entire food range. This could result in food stores expanding to an impressive 18,000 sq ft, with wider aisles and larger car parks to accommodate more customers. The company aims to lure shoppers away from supermarkets, encouraging them to do their weekly grocery shopping at M&S food halls instead.

But here's where it gets controversial: M&S's expansion plan includes transforming 12 former Homebase stores into food halls, with the first already opened in Cannock. This move has raised eyebrows, as it could be seen as a bold strategy to fill gaps in the market left by struggling retailers. Is this a savvy business move or a risky venture? You decide!

M&S's managing director, Alex Freudmann, is confident in the company's expansion, stating that the strong performance of their new food stores encourages them to explore even more locations. With a focus on providing the best shopping experience and range for customers, M&S is determined to bring its unique offering to new areas.

So, is your town on M&S's wish-list? Stay tuned as this retail giant continues its journey towards a bigger and better food empire. And don't forget to share your thoughts on this expansion strategy in the comments below. Are you excited about the potential changes, or do you have concerns about the impact on local businesses and the high street?
