The Logitech Alto Keys K98M: A Keyboard with a Twist
Logitech has finally brought its innovative Alto Keys K98M mechanical keyboard to North America, following its initial release in China and other markets. Priced at $149.99, this almost full-size keyboard offers a unique blend of features that cater to both enthusiasts and the general market. But here's where it gets interesting: the K98M is fully hot-swappable, allowing users to customize their typing experience with standard Cherry MX-compatible key switches. And it achieves this with an internal gasket mount, providing a semi-soft typing feel that's a departure from Logitech's typical offerings.
Logitech seems to be taking inspiration from the enthusiast keyboard community, a move that's long overdue. The Alto Keys sports a two-piece plastic case with a translucent top and a color-matched opaque bottom, available in white, graphite, and lavender. The design is simple yet appealing, with white backlighting and PBT keycaps that allow the light to shine through. It's a clean aesthetic that's sure to catch the eye.
I had the pleasure of reviewing a unit, and I must say, the Alto Keys delivers on its promise. The translucent case and visible internal components give it an airy, modern look. The lavender color option is particularly charming, but even the more traditional graphite and white models are sleek and stylish. And the best part? You can easily customize the keycaps to your heart's desire, thanks to the hot-swappable switches.
However, when it comes to software, Logitech's Logi Options Plus app falls short. While the UI is user-friendly and offers basic settings adjustments, the customization options are severely limited. You're only able to customize the alternate functions of 12 F-row keys, which pales in comparison to cheaper keyboards that utilize software like QMK and VIA, allowing for virtually any key to be remapped.
In terms of sound, the Alto Keys produces a light, clacky noise that's pleasant to the ears. It's not overly loud, making it suitable for most office environments. The design's lightness extends to the typing experience as well. Logitech's marble switches provide a linear travel of 3.5mm, offering a smooth and weighted feel with 40 grams of actuation force. The UniCushion gasket adds a subtle flex to the keys, but it maintains a firm foundation, preventing that mushy feeling.
I'm thoroughly impressed by the Alto Keys and its enthusiast-inspired features. It's a breath of fresh air in the world of Logitech keyboards. However, at $150, it faces stiff competition from prebuilt keyboards by smaller brands, many of which offer more expansive software customization and higher-quality materials at a lower price point. Brands like Epomaker, Wobkey, and Chilkey provide excellent alternatives, especially if you prefer metal cases.
And for those who prefer a more compact layout, Logitech's 75-percent Alto Keys K75M could be the perfect fit. It's a keyboard I'm eagerly awaiting, as it continues Logitech's journey into the enthusiast market.
