The world is changing, and young people are leading the charge! With pressing issues like mental health, climate change, and social isolation shaping their experiences, today's youth are stepping up, ready to make a difference. And with the United Nations designating 2026 as International Volunteer Year, the spotlight is on service-minded individuals of all ages. This is where the Leo Program, the youth arm of Lions Clubs International, shines.
Through the Leo Program, over 200,000 young people in more than 150 countries are actively working to create positive change. They're tackling environmental issues, fighting hunger, and addressing health and education challenges. As the world celebrates International Leo Day on December 5th, Lions International invites us to recognize a powerful truth: young people aren't waiting for adulthood to make a difference; they're acting now.
"Leos remind us that the power to change the world begins with kindness," says A.P. Singh, Lions Clubs International President. He adds that these young people inspire Lions and volunteers everywhere to continue building unity and hope.
The Leo Program provides a space for young people to lead, serve, and grow alongside peers and mentors. Since the 1960s, it has empowered youth aged 12 to 30 to turn compassion into action through partnerships with local Lions Clubs. Every year, Leos organize more than 60,000 service projects. These projects range from organizing food drives and cleaning up parks to promoting literacy and raising mental health awareness.
- Impactful Initiatives:
- In India, the University of Delhi and South Leo Club launched a "Library on Wheels," bringing educational resources to underprivileged communities.
- In Sri Lanka, the Lions Club of Gampaha Metro and Leo Club of Gampaha Metro Juniors hosted a health camp, serving 117 community members with free checkups.
- The Leo Club of Hopeville in India brought joy to 100 young patients at a cancer hospital through their "Hope for Little Heroes" initiative.
- Leo Clubs in Arizona support the homeless population, providing food, backpacks, and hygiene products to 400 individuals.
- In Uganda, the Leo Club of Kyambogo improved a local school through renovations.
Wilson Morengo, a Leo-Lion from Paraguay, reflects on his experience: "This journey has helped me grow into the person I am today, professionally and personally." He's made lifelong friendships and even met his wife through the program. He recently participated in a relief mission, providing aid to nearly 30,000 families impacted by flooding.
The Leo experience is more than just volunteering; it's a foundation for lifelong leadership. Many Leos become Lions, continuing their service. They build essential skills in teamwork, communication, and project management while strengthening their communities.
