One of the key points of contention was the failed Russell Westbrook trade. According to the report, Buss "privately bristled" at James' lack of accountability for the move. This led to further speculation about the future of James' partnership with the Lakers, with some sources claiming Buss considered not offering him a contract extension and even floating the idea of trading him to the LA Clippers.
However, James offered a different perspective. He acknowledged that while his relationship with Buss might be seen as strained by some, he believed it was good. He emphasized his respect, honor, and loyalty to the franchise, stating, "I played here longer than pretty much any other franchise I played for besides Cleveland."
