A vital stretch of Highway 2 is facing a prolonged closure, potentially lasting for months, impacting travel and local businesses. This closure, spanning approximately 49 miles between Skykomish and Leavenworth, is due to severe damage caused by recent storms, as confirmed by Governor Bob Ferguson. The situation is so dire that parts of the road have been completely washed away, necessitating extensive rebuilding efforts.
State Secretary of Transportation Julie Meredith has highlighted the severity of the damage, noting that in certain areas, the road is underwater. At Milepost 54, a bridge is buried under several feet of debris, and there's also an active slide area near Tumwater Canyon, with significant erosion taking place.
"It's premature to estimate exactly how long that closure will be, but that is obviously a major highway, and we understand the implications to business, individuals and human lives of not having that highway available for an extended period of time," Ferguson said. "We're going to do everything we possibly can to repair it as quickly as possible, but it's literally underwater at some stages - there are major major issues on that highway".
The initial closure of Highway 2 occurred on December 10th, from Index to Coles Corner, due to mud, water, and debris. While a portion reopened the following day, the section over Stevens Pass to Leavenworth has remained closed.
The recent storms have significantly impacted the town of Leavenworth, causing widespread power outages and forcing the temporary suspension of its winter festivities. The Village of Lights has since resumed its operations.
But here's where it gets controversial... Business owners in the area are expressing concerns about the financial impact, as December is typically their most lucrative month. The extended closure could severely affect their revenue streams.
And this is the part most people miss... The damage is so extensive that rebuilding the highway will be a complex and time-consuming process.
