The Bank of Ghana's Governor, Dr. Johnson Asiama, issued a cautionary statement regarding the country's monetary policy in 2026, despite recent positive economic developments. In his opening remarks at the 128th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in Accra, Dr. Asiama acknowledged the positive economic indicators but urged a cautious approach. He highlighted that while inflation has decreased to 5.4% by the end of 2025, and the central bank has the flexibility to adjust policies, the MPC's primary focus should be on ensuring future stability rather than celebrating past achievements.
Dr. Asiama also noted that Ghana's gross international reserves have risen to US$13.8 billion, covering 5.7 months of imports, and the country's current account surplus is equivalent to 8.1% of its GDP. These factors contribute to a strong economic foundation.
Furthermore, Dr. Asiama addressed the global economic landscape, stating that growth remains resilient at approximately 3.3% in 2026 despite geopolitical challenges. However, he warned that the gains, particularly from higher gold prices, might be temporary. Dr. Asiama's message was clear: while disinflation provides policy flexibility, future decisions must carefully balance growth and credibility to maintain Ghana's economic stability.
