The Goaso Diocese of the Methodist Church Ghana recently launched its inaugural Thomas Wallace Koomson Memorial Lecture, delivering a powerful message about the crucial need for a national transformation. The lecture, a highlight of the Diocese’s 10th-anniversary celebration, paid tribute to the late Most Rev. Thomas Wallace Koomson, a figure whose life exemplified integrity, discipline, and unwavering dedication to public service. He was Goaso's first Methodist minister and the Church’s second Presiding Bishop. His legacy continues to inspire the Christian community.
The keynote speaker, Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph M.Y. Edusa-Eyison, a respected lecturer from Trinity Theological Seminary, painted Bishop Koomson as a beacon of truthfulness, commitment, and patriotism. These virtues, he argued, are desperately needed as Ghana grapples with significant challenges, including corruption and environmental destruction.

Addressing the alarming issue of environmental destruction, particularly the devastating impact of illegal mining, the speaker issued a stark warning: the nation's forests, rivers, and farmlands are under siege. He described the perpetrators as "nation wreckers."
He proposed a practical solution: the formation of community watchdog teams comprised of chiefs, youth groups, and Assembly members to safeguard local ecosystems. He argued that relying solely on military and police interventions has proven insufficient to halt the environmental crisis. He also advocated for stricter penalties for illegal miners and a nationwide revival of civic education to rekindle patriotism and shift public attitudes away from the greed-driven exploitation of natural resources.
According to Prof. Edusa-Eyison, Ghana stands at a pivotal moment. Environmental responsibility and strong national values must be the cornerstones of its development.
