Schmier, the bassist and vocalist of the legendary thrash metal band DESTRUCTION, boldly declares that he intends to continue making music until his very last breath. In a recent conversation with Stefan Nilsson from Roppongi Rocks, Schmier shared insights into what has fueled his passion for music for over 40 years since the band's founding. He expressed, "Music transcends mere entertainment; it embodies a lifestyle and an emotional experience. It brings joy not only to me but to countless fans as well."
Reflecting on his journey, Schmier mentioned attempts to explore other avenues beyond music, such as running a restaurant. However, he quickly realized that his heart lies in music. He stated, "No matter what I tried, my identity as a musician always beckoned me back. Traveling, connecting with fans, performing live, and creating new songs are what truly fulfill me. For the past 20 years, people have asked me about my plans post-music. I often say, 'I will likely drop dead after music ends because it's a passion that lasts a lifetime, not merely a job.' I feel fortunate to still have this opportunity as long as our fans continue to support us. We'll keep playing thrash metal until our bodies can no longer handle it, but for now, we’re in great shape and looking forward to more productive years ahead."
In the interview, Schmier also discussed the evolution of DESTRUCTION's lineup, particularly the addition of guitarist Damir Eskić in 2019 and Martin Furia in 2021. Eskić, originally from Bosnia but based in Switzerland, is not only a talented guitarist but also a guitar instructor who has studied under Tommy Vetterli of CORONER. He previously performed with the heavy metal band GOMORRA. In contrast, Furia, who hails from Argentina but resides in Belgium, is renowned for his work as a sound engineer and producer for bands like NERVOSA and EVIL INVADERS.
Schmier elaborated, "We’ve been a quartet for quite some time now, since 2019, which feels like it has already been seven years. I loved our trio formation, inspired by iconic bands like MOTÖRHEAD, RUSH, and VENOM. However, having two guitarists opens up a plethora of creative possibilities. The songwriting process becomes richer, and live performances gain a raw intensity with more harmonies and dual leads. Heavy metal, in essence, thrives with two guitars. While I cherish the power trio dynamic where each member bears greater responsibility, the creativity and overall sound have vastly improved as a four-piece band."
Discussing Furia’s transition into the role of DESTRUCTION's second guitarist, Schmier noted, "Initially, he was our tour manager and sound engineer, and he has seamlessly stepped into the guitarist position. When we sought a new guitarist, we needed someone who not only excels at their craft but also fits into our band’s culture and understands our history. He was the first candidate we auditioned, and he came prepared beyond our expectations. It was clear he was a perfect fit for us. We hoped he’d practiced enough, knowing he was a solid musician, but DESTRUCTION's songs demand a high level of technical skill. As a producer and sound engineer, he brings valuable expertise and creativity to our team."
Looking ahead, DESTRUCTION is set to tour the U.S. alongside TESTAMENT as part of their "Thrash Of The Titans" world tour, kicking off in March, with OVERKILL also joining as supporting acts.
Their latest studio album, "Birth Of Malice," was launched in March 2025 via Napalm Records, marking DESTRUCTION's 16th release. Schmier is currently supported by Furia and Eskić, along with drummer Randy Black.
The recording took place at Little Creek Studio in Switzerland, with V.O. Pulver at the helm, while Furia handled the mixing and mastering at The Black Mancave in Hannover, Germany.
Throughout their illustrious career, DESTRUCTION has achieved significant milestones, gracing stages at numerous prestigious festivals worldwide, including Hellfest, Wacken Open Air, Graspop Metal Meeting, and México Metal Fest.
In August 2021, the band officially parted ways with founding guitarist Mike Sifringer, bringing Furia into the fold as his successor.
