A bold move to empower African businesses: Unlocking growth for Cameroon's SMEs!
In a significant development, the African Development Bank Group has approved a €25 million trade finance facility, a game-changer for Cameroon's Crédit Communautaire d'Afrique-Bank (CCA-Bank). But here's where it gets controversial: this funding isn't just about supporting a single bank; it's about empowering an entire nation's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and driving economic growth.
The facility, approved by the Bank Group's Board of Directors during a session in Abidjan on December 1st, will be deployed as a Transaction Guarantee. This innovative product provides risk coverage to eligible African banks for their trade finance transactions, a crucial step towards fostering economic development on the continent.
Lamin Drammeh, Head of the Bank Group's Trade Finance Division, explained the impact: "This facility will not only facilitate imports of equipment for vital sectors like industry, agro-industry, and telecommunications, but it will also enable the African Development Bank to provide up to a 100% guarantee to confirming banks. This, in turn, will facilitate the confirmation of letters of credit and other trade finance instruments issued by CCA-Bank for the benefit of Cameroon's SMEs."
Léandre Bassolé, Director General of the Bank's Central Africa region, emphasized the strategic alignment of this operation with the institution's ambition to increase its direct interventions in favor of the private sector in Cameroon. "It will significantly enhance CCA-Bank's ability to support the activities of SMEs, including those owned by women and young people, thereby boosting the local productive sector, facilitating economic growth, and creating and maintaining thousands of jobs," he stated.
Marguerite Fonkwen Atanga, Managing Director of CCA-Bank, expressed gratitude for this debut direct financing support from the African Development Bank Group. "This strategic partnership is a major milestone for our institution and will significantly strengthen our capacity to support small and medium-sized enterprises, women entrepreneurs, and startups in Cameroon and across Africa," she said.
The Transaction Guarantee, launched by the African Development Bank in 2021, is a powerful trade finance instrument designed to support commercial banks in Africa. It covers a range of trade finance instruments, including confirmed letters of credit, commercial loans, irrevocable repayment undertakings, endorsed drafts, and promissory notes. This facility is available to all banks registered and operating in Africa that have successfully completed the African Development Bank's due diligence process.
