Caleb Downs Highlighted for Major Knee Issue at NFL Combine
The Cincinnati Bengals face a pressing need to bolster their defense, with safety ranking high on the list of priorities. One name that has captured widespread attention among fans is Ohio State safety Caleb Downs. Entering the NFL Scouting Combine, Downs was widely regarded as one of the top talents in this year’s draft pool.
But there was some disappointing news that surfaced during the week. Daft on Draft writer Corey Kinnan reported that Downs left Indianapolis with medical concerns. “Ending on a bummer here, I was told by an NFC scout that Ohio State all-class safety Caleb Downs had a couple of issues flagged during his medical check,” Kinnan shared. “Nobody expected him to test this week anyway, so it flew a bit under the radar. However, I was told that Downs was flagged with a partially torn meniscus this week. That is not a serious concern, but also being flagged with a potentially degenerative ACL is. Now, this is not to signify any sort of significant drop for Downs, who likely will return and get a second opinion and a second check. Besides, plenty of NFL players have been flagged with degenerative knees before, but have gone on to have successful NFL careers.”
Kinnan suggested that, while the injury isn’t catastrophic and may not dramatically alter his draft stock, it could prompt some teams to reconsider his relative ranking. A few organizations might opt to push players ahead of him in the evaluation process.
The Bengals, along with other franchises, possess far more detailed medical information than public observers. They’ll determine the severity of the tear, the current state of any ACL degeneration, and how these factors could affect Upside and longevity. With that data, they’ll be able to make a more informed call than onlookers like us.
Even with the news, there remains a plausible path for Downs to be available when Cincinnati picks at No. 10. Yet the same information could also nudge the Bengals toward passing on him in favor of a premium-position contributor such as a cornerback or defensive end.
So, after hearing this update, do you still want Caleb Downs to land with the Bengals? And if so, would you be comfortable with the potential health risks, or would you prefer they prioritize a healthier, higher-impact option at a different position?
