In a surprising turn of events, Pat Cummins has officially been excluded from the 2026 T20 World Cup due to an ongoing back injury. As a result, Ben Dwarshuis has been selected as his replacement in Australia’s final fifteen-player roster. Additionally, Matthew Short has been dropped from the squad and replaced by Matt Renshaw, primarily due to performance issues, while there is no place for Steven Smith in this lineup.
On a more positive note, key players such as Josh Hazlewood, Tim David, and Nathan Ellis have all been cleared to participate in the World Cup. Hazlewood has been sidelined since he sustained injuries to his hamstring and Achilles before the Ashes series. Meanwhile, David had missed a significant portion of both the Big Bash League (BBL) and the Pakistan series because of a hamstring problem, and Ellis sat out both the BBL finals and the Pakistan tour after experiencing a minor hamstring issue.
Initially, Cummins was included in Australia’s provisional 15-man squad with the intention of allowing him to regain fitness during the early stages of the tournament. However, he has not played since the Adelaide Test against England in mid-December, which marked his only appearance since last July, when he first began showing symptoms of a lumbar stress injury in his lower back. To aid his recovery, he was rested following the Ashes and was focusing on being fit for the T20 World Cup. Although his recent scans in January showed promising results, Cricket Australia has indicated that Cummins "needs more time" to fully recuperate. It is believed that he may be ready to return by the time of the IPL.
Dwarshuis’s inclusion comes after he was previously overlooked for the provisional squad, and he brings a valuable left-arm pace option to the team. Short’s removal from the squad is attributed to his underwhelming performance and the necessity for another left-handed batsman who is more adept at handling spin bowling in the middle overs. Renshaw, who just made his T20I debut in Pakistan recently, has shown outstanding form in domestic white-ball competitions, including the BBL. His performance during his ODI debut against India late last year further showcased his ability to tackle Indian spinners effectively.
Australia selector Tony Dodemaide commented, "With Pat needing additional time to recover from his back injury, Ben is a suitable replacement who not only provides a left-arm pace option but also excels in fielding and batting late in the order. We believe his capability to swing the ball at a good pace and his clever variations will suit the expected playing conditions and the overall team structure."
Dodemaide continued by praising Renshaw's recent performances in various formats: "Matt has showcased impressive skills across formats, playing multiple roles in white-ball cricket for Australia, the Queensland Bulls, and the Brisbane Heat. With our top order well-established and spin-heavy conditions anticipated during the group stages in Sri Lanka, we feel that Matt will enhance our middle-order strength, especially with Tim David returning to full fitness early in the tournament. Additionally, as a left-handed batsman, he provides a unique option in our middle order."
This reshuffling leaves no space for Steven Smith, despite his remarkable form in the BBL, which had sparked discussions about his potential return to the T20I team after he was absent from international T20 cricket since March 2024, having also missed the previous T20 World Cup campaign. Smith is primarily viewed as a non-bowling opener, and Australia has established a solid opening partnership with captain Mitchell Marsh and vice-captain Travis Head. Cameron Green and Glenn Maxwell have also successfully opened the batting in T20I matches, with Maxwell even scoring a T20I century while opening against Sri Lanka at Pallekele in 2016, the very venue where Australia will face Sri Lanka in the group stage.
Interestingly, while Maxwell is listed as the reserve wicketkeeper in the squad despite never having kept wickets in a professional match, Josh Inglis is the only designated keeper included in the 15-man roster. However, former keeper-batter Matthew Wade is accompanying the team in a coaching capacity, and there are rumors that he might bring his playing gear just in case of an emergency, even though he has officially retired from international cricket after the 2024 World Cup.
Here’s the complete Australian squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup:
